“Slow Horses” invites you to the world of Slough House, the miserable backwater of MI5 where disgraced agents spend their days in punishment. This show is not glamorous like other spy shows. It is built on the failures of its characters instead of their successes. Jackson Lamb, played by Gary Oldman, is the leader of the team. He is described as always being messy and rude. This team of the worst MI5 agents is constantly brought into dangerous situations against their will. This team is surprisingly good at finding the truth. Even though these people are the worst MI5 agents, they are surrounded by even worse people and usually dangerous situations. The show has a unique format by being boring and miserable. This format makes the show different and hooks the audience from the first episode. Each episode has a real life threat with a different sort of espionage case that is solving for MI5. This show has dangerous situations while retaining an intelligence that is not sharp.

The Grime, The Grit, and Oldman's Gravitas

The series is famous for its narratives, which include elaborate, surprising, and complex plots, and character developments. Gary Oldman is the star of the show for his outstanding performance as Jackson Lamb in “Slow Horses”. Lamb is a classic dual character with ugly exterior and a beautiful soul, a genius and a genius hide behind layers of grime and bad habits combined with negativity and cynicism. His character is clever, but unpredictable, and plays beautifully with everyone’s favorite dark humor. Oldman’s ability to make audiences love a character with a horrible personality is genius. The entire cast of Slough House is exceptional, and that is highlighted with River Cartwright, who is played by Jack Lowden, and Diana Taverner, who is played by Kristin Scott Thomas. The show balances characters’ struggles and personal issues and spy drama equally, and never neglects complex character and drama development. The writing is exceptional and stays true to the genre by never tricking the audience with humor and never neglecting the darkness that comes with the territory. The audience rating of the show and the positive reviews by the critics otherwise prove that the show is a winner and is a good addition to any streaming service.

A Spy Thriller for the Discerning Viewer

For viewers who have seen one too many Hollywood spy movies, "Slow Horses" offers a more realistic and grounded take on the genre, while still providing plenty of moments to keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat. Given the "TV-MA" rating, viewers should know the show contains a good dose of violence, contains foul language, and shows some morally questionable situations. The show is certainly not mindless and knows how to keep the viewer interested. Lovers of the crime drama and mystery shows will have plenty to enjoy as well, as the show contains some of the best plots in television, along with unraveling conspiracy after conspiracy to challenge their characters' strengths of intellect and resolve. The dry British humor and character-centric writing make it a real pleasure to watch, so long as you don't mind a more methodical and cynical tone. Probably the most fast-paced and high-octane of the action scenes is the book the show is based on. The more deliberate pacing has its drawbacks as the audience is put to more of an active role while processing the slower and more methodical plotlines, but in the end, the payoff is worth the wait. Overall the show is a unique balance of storytelling and audience interaction, making it an easy show to recommendation.

An Unflinching Look at MI5's Underbelly

Slow Horses brings something unique to television. Rather than depict the Baghdad Bombings only, it shows us what happens in the trenches of the intelligence world. Focusing more heavily on internal issues, Slow Horses shows us the internal politics and issues of the intelligence world and how the bureaucracy of this world really inhibits justice. Better yet, each season of Slow Horses has new, interesting plot lines that supplement the bureaucracy and intelligence world. While the plot lines are interesting, the writers still show us loyalty and the cost associated with working in the intelligence world. The writers do a great job of creating storylines that are interesting and that build suspense. Slow Horses takes a great premise of a gloomy building where intelligence fails to slough off is a grim realist take on the world of intelligence. Usually, shows are hit or miss beyond the first season due to the writers not creating compelling stories, characters, and acting consistently. This is not the case with Slow Horses. This is why Slow Horses is deserving of praise as one of the best spy shows to come out recently, and why it deserves its place on Coco Flix.
