The Spotlight and the Shadow: Navigating Teenage Drama
Amber Douglass's "Don't Say Good Luck" piques the interest of anyone who ever dealt with combining the stress of the growth and development of their formative years and the pressure of their aspirations. Mackenzie, played by Sunny Sandler, is the protagonist. She will be the lead in her school's musical. This plot element, the departure point of many films containing self-discovery and performance nerves, becomes more intricate with the premise as unpredictable "more drama at home than on the stage." The heart of the film is the juxtaposition of the easily visible, entertaining world of the musical against the family life drama, which may be more difficult to deal with. The use of elements of all three (musical theater, drama, comedy) is an attempt to make a film that will resonate with a broad audience and will also lift, tug, and make members of the audience hum along to, hopefully, a good soundtrack in the process, all within a crisp 1 hour and 36 minutes.
Director Julia Hart has proven her ability to craft compelling stories about complex female characters with both "Miss Stevens" and "Fast Color." With her background, Hart is a great choice to bring her perspective to the high school-set world. She has a history of drawing texture and emotion from her actors in more straightforward plots. This story will demand her ability to tell a narrative about a teen involved in the school production that is first and foremost real, but also theatrical. This story will have a PG-13 rating, which is a good sign that the story can deal with the emotional bears of the plot and themes and really lean into them, which is great considering it is appropriate for teens and a wider family demographic. There will be music/songs in this film as Julia Hart Hudlin needs to bring Sophie's internal struggles to the screen with this type of medium. Fantasy dream sequences and emotional raw sequences are all viable ways the film can showcase Sophie's struggle. These options will help define the film.
Performances and the Poignancy of Growing Up
The lead actors in "Don't Say Good Luck" seem to have great casting for powerful, multidimensional characters. Sophie's lead role has Sunny Sandler who will use her energy and timing to bring a character audiences will want to root for. Sophie's layer of having the drama with her family and having a lot of pressure for her first lead will take a special actor to be able to display a lot of emotional range one moment and be completely relaxed and thoughtful the next. It takes a special performer to show the silence of the heart.
Sandler is also joined by co-stars Melanie Lynskey and Max Greenfield. Lynskey, who has wonderful emotional depth, will ideally play a parental or supporting figure. This casting reinforces that the dysfunctions of home will be taken more seriously and done more realistically, getting beyond traditional high school movie tropes. Greenfield is more known for his comedian roles, but his dramatic turn and/or bringing a new lightness into the Greenfield family dynamics will add a lot of much needed conflict. These actors, along with Sandler, will definitely create a strong ensemble. This family will help develop the emotional side of Sophie’s story. The actors themselves, especially the layered performances of the ensemble, will prove the most important part of the movie. These actors will give the movie the emotional impact it is looking for through the more serious family moments inbetween the music numbers.
Who Will Find Their Rhythm with This Film?
The demographic for "Don't Say Good Luck" is probably watching for all the heartfelt drama, comedy, and the warm fuzzies that musical storytelling has to offer. For teenagers and members of school arts programs in particular, I think they'll particularly like the story of Sophie since it reflects personal struggles with family in the same way she does. This one is rated PG-13, so this one's family friendly. It's a great opportunity for families to talk about the importance of communication with regards to their goals and keeping up the determination it takes to succeed. It also takes a more optimistic, Christ-centered approach to the emotional side of the growing-up process that the audience tends to enjoy.
On the other side, this probably will not be of interest to people that really want grittiness and harsh reality in their movies. This, in my opinion, is not particularly hard hitting, but rather concentrates more in the hopeful, positive side of things. For professionals that want a deeply realistic portrayal of teenage life, I can see them probably dismissing this film. This movie focuses more of the spirit of youthfulness and the strong, optimistic nature that one should have going through life's obstacles. So, to sum this all up, this movie is definitely a must watch. You have to see this CocoFlix original to truly appreciate the talent that is represented.Basically, everyone is always losing control, having life get them off script, and this film is a really great reminder for everyone.
