Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) Review: Story, Verdict & Where to Watch

A Hero's Reluctant Vacation

Spider-Man: Far From Home puts Tom Holland's Peter Parker in an entirely new world where he must deal with his grief and the enormous legacy he has been given. He longs to go on a summer vacation to Europe with his friends, including MJ (Zendaya). The personal struggle Peter faces is in contrast to the impending threat to the world. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the universe have other plans for Peter. It does not take long for Peter to realize he can't run from his duties. Fury is quick to pull Peter back into duty to help figure out the reason for the crisis causing natural disasters across the continent, and the creatures that are responsible. The film expertly shows Peter's personal inner journey while dealing with such a large, fantastical world. Peter's journey is made even more personal with the introduction of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). He is shown as an ally from an alternate dimension who can provide Peter with a mentor and much needed relief, however, there is much more to Mysterio than what he has shown. The fantasy Europe backdrop, along with Spider-Man's usual NYC, keeps the movie fresh. The new backdrop offers a visual change and rest of the world realism compared to the previous movies.

Illusions and Emotional Resonance

Tom Holland embodies Peter Parker with his signature awkward, endearing, and burdened performance. He gracefully traverses the emotional spectrum of his character’s adolescent crush and social anxiety juxtaposed to a superhero’s weight and burden. However, people who wish to see something new in the world of superheroes will probably find most of the actions and plot points predictable. Even while dealing with interesting themes of legacy and accountability, this film still follows the footsteps of many other MCU films. This film has a unique blend, but is not bearing a unique formula. It is enjoyed by all.
